Trump Warns of Removal of 2026 World Cup Matches from Boston, Olympics from California

Former President Trump has once again declared he would pressure FIFA to remove upcoming World Cup events from a designated city based on that city's politics, with Boston emerging as the latest urban area to receive such threats from the American leader. Furthermore, Trump indicated he would contemplate similar action against LA for the 2028 Summer Games due to perceived security concerns.

Jurisdictional Limits and Possible Pressure

Although Trump lacks direct legal authority to directly relocate either competition, he is able to lobby the international organizations managing each competition to shift locations.

Setting for Statements

These comments were made during a media briefing with Argentina's leader Milei, who was visiting the White House following the disclosure of a multibillion-dollar rescue package for the South American nation. Near the end of the meeting, a journalist questioned Trump about a recent unauthorized gathering in downtown Boston where law enforcement were attacked and a cruiser was set on fire. The journalist also wondered if such events could cause the revocation of hosting duties for the expanded soccer tournament.

“We could take them away,” the former president remarked concerning the FIFA World Cup fixtures, scheduled to be held at Gillette Stadium. “She is ineffective … she’s far-left, and activists are taking over sections of the city. That is a pretty big statement, isn't it?”

Urban Disturbances and Political Context

Public disruptions, a digitally organized trend where groups of people gather on public avenues during nighttime to conduct vehicular acrobatics, have become a repeated problem in US urban areas since the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. Recent such gatherings have turned violent in Massachusetts, including the city. Yet, these occurrences are usually not considered linked to any specific ideological group.

“If a mayor is performing poorly, and I perceive there’s dangerous circumstances, I would call the FIFA head, who is outstanding, and suggest let’s move it to another location,” the former president stated publicly. “He will do that. He may not enjoy to do it, but he would comply. Very easily, he'd comply.”

Organizational Alignment

The organization's head has made no secret his efforts to be visibly associated with Trump prior to next year’s tournament, planned to be organized in multiple US locations across the United States along with a couple in the northern neighbor and a few in the southern neighbor. The head has participated at multiple White House gatherings, had Trump present the Club World Cup trophy after the concluding game, and has even rescheduled his the group's assembly to travel with Trump on a visit to the Middle East this year.

Earlier Warnings

Nevertheless, Trump from warning about the relocation of World Cup games from different locations. In late September, Seattle and San Francisco came under comparable statements, with Trump asserting both cities were “run by ideological activists who don’t know what they are doing,” while challenging the security conditions of both locales and implying that games could be shifted.

Official Rebuttal

Victor Montagliani rejected Trump’s statements when he responded days later at a event in England.

“This is FIFA’s tournament, our responsibility, FIFA makes such choices,” the vice-president stated. “With all due respect to current world leaders, soccer is bigger than political figures and football will outlast their administration and their policies. That is the beauty of football, that it is transcends any individual and bigger than a nation.”

During the event, Trump’s answer to a question about Boston extended to a comparable warning regarding the upcoming Summer Games.

“If I thought LA was not sufficiently organized, I would move it to an alternate venue if necessary,” he remarked. “On that one I might have to secure a different kind of approval, but we'd proceed.”

Any approval Trump refers to would must come via the Olympic governing body. Their president, the newly elected president, was elected to her role in March and has yet to appear together with the former president, though she indicated that she hopes for a meeting with the US figure at eventually.

Additional Criticism

Trump also condemned Gavin Newsom’s management of the California fires, remarking that a parallel incident could result in the relocation of the Olympics.

“When the governor doesn’t play ball, we’re gonna have to be firm,” the former president said.

His statement was equally clear for Boston.

“The city better clean up their act,” Trump stated. “That’s all I can say.”
