A Tooth Fairy Tale Film Analysis: Cartoon Journey with a Touch of Family-Friendly Preteen Romance

Throughout this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the fairy community is dedicated to collecting teeth from slumbering youngsters and leaving treasure under their pillows. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more curious about the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who provide metal in exchange. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous gnome he had imagined.

A Forbidden Connection and Common Enemy

Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of young love (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The goblin and fairy groups are separated from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. The two species as seen here are incredibly similar, yet each holds biased views about the other. Fairies are said to be self-centered types, given to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are allegedly stupid, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are in fact bright and advanced in technology.

Naturally, this scenario requires a common enemy to join forces against, and that need is met in the form of a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, though not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

You won’t find very many animated films targeting the viewer group that is beginning to have first crushes, but are not old enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days instead of Twilight. If your child falls into this age group, this is unlikely to be their next all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.

A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in Scottish cinemas from 10 October and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
